Getting to Taormina & Where to Stay

A Guide to getting there, where to stay and what to see.

Located in Sicily and settled on a hill of the Monte Tauro and overlooking the ocean, Taormina has been nicknamed the Pearl of the Ionian Sea.  Taormina dominates two grand, sweeping bays below and on the southern side, the top of Mount Etna, the European highest active volcano, often capped with snow, offering to the visitors a breathtaking, dramatic and memorable view over almost one hundred miles of Mediterranean sea.

Fly into Catania (CTA), the closest airport to Taormina.

From there, the town is approximately a one-hour drive along the coast. Private transfers and taxis are readily available.

Taormina offers two distinct areas, each with its own charm.

Grand Hotel Timeo is one of the loveliest hotels on Sicily, and one of two Belmond properties in Taormina. It’s location couldn’t be more perfect, literally next door to the Greek Theatre ruins, a couple minutes walk from the main Corso Umberto. The hotel is the epitome of five-star luxury – antique decor, ornate rooms, plush linens and the dreamiest views. Like most Belmond properties, the food is wonderful(worth making a dinner reservation, even if you’re not a guest). The hotel is home to a beautiful pool set in the serene landscaped garden, and a free shuttle takes guestto the private beach club of Villa San’Andrea.

NH Collection Taormina is a chic, contemporary five-star hotel right in the heart of town, just steps from Corso Umberto and a short walk from the Greek Theatre. It has a more modern feel than some of Taormina’s grand old classics, with sleek rooms, warm interiors, and many balconies or terraces overlooking the city and coastline. The rooftop restaurant, infinity pool, and spa all make the most of the hotel’s sweeping views of the sea, Mount Etna, and the Sicilian coast.

Hotel Villa Belvedere is a charming boutique hotel, a family-run property set in a historic Sicilian villa that has welcomed guests since 1902. In a quieter hillside spot near the public gardens and just a short walk from the center of Taormina, it has a romantic, old-world feel that sets it apart from the larger luxury hotels. The terraced gardens, lovely pool, and beautiful views of the sea and Mount Etna give it a relaxed, timeless atmosphere that feels especially special.

Take one look at this cliffside pool and cave-access beach club, and you’ll be smittenwith Hotel Capptaormina. The hotel itself is pretty standard, and a bit dated. A stay here would solely be to experience the epic pool and beach, both featured in White Lotus.

This converted townhouse is an amazing value for Taormina, centrally located onthe Corso Umberto. 10 small rooms occupy the boutique hotel – all are simple, clean and very modern. There is a pretty rooftop terrace that serves up a lovely spot for drinks in the evening, although there are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants just steps away from Hotel Taodomus.
